Jio Surges Ahead in January 2026: Airtel Trails, Vodafone Idea Continues to Struggle

Reliance Jio has once again reinforced its dominance in India’s telecom sector, emerging as the top performer in January 2026, according to the latest data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

The Mukesh Ambani-led telecom giant added approximately 1.6 million (16 lakh) new subscribers during the month, outpacing its closest rivals and widening the gap in an increasingly competitive market.

Jio Leads Subscriber Growth

The TRAI report highlights a clear lead for Jio in subscriber additions:

  • Reliance Jio: +1.6 million users
  • Bharti Airtel: +1.2 million users
  • BSNL: +0.4 million users
  • Vodafone Idea (Vi): -0.7 million users (loss)

Jio’s strong performance has been attributed not only to its mobile services but also to aggressive expansion in the broadband segment.

JioAirFiber Driving Broadband Expansion

A key growth driver for Jio has been its Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) offering, particularly JioAirFiber.

  • The company added 0.78 million home broadband subscribers in January alone, according to JM Financial.
  • Additionally, 0.25 million users were added in the FWA segment (excluding UBR services).

Jio remains the only telecom operator in India currently offering UBR (Unlicensed Band Radio) services, further strengthening its technological edge.

Market Share Snapshot

In the wireless segment, Jio continues to dominate:

  • Jio: 503.57 million subscribers
  • Airtel: 384.91 million subscribers
  • Vodafone Idea: 128.97 million subscribers

Jio is not only the leader in mobile subscribers but also holds the top position in the wired broadband market, benefiting from the rapid growth in home internet demand.

Vodafone Idea Under Pressure

Vodafone Idea continues to face challenges, with subscriber numbers steadily declining. Despite rolling out 5G services, the company has yet to translate this into user growth.

Industry analysts note that Vi must significantly improve network quality and customer acquisition to remain competitive in the long term.

Outlook for the Telecom Sector

While Jio and Airtel continue to add users consistently, BSNL shows occasional growth. The competitive landscape suggests a widening gap between the top two players and the rest.

With increasing demand for high-speed data and home broadband, companies investing in infrastructure and next-generation services are likely to maintain an edge.
