Meanwhile, Iran's Revolutionary Guard said on the internet media platform X that American universities in the Middle East are now "legitimate targets." The warning came after an airstrike on the physics building of the Iran University of Science and Technology in Tehran, which Iran has blamed on Israel.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed that other Iranian educational institutions, including the Isfahan University of Technology, were also affected in the attack. NYU Abu Dhabi has approximately 2,200 students representing 120 countries. About a quarter of these students are citizens of the United Arab Emirates.

Following Iran's warning, Georgetown University Qatar, Texas A&M Qatar, Virginia Commonwealth Qatar, Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar, Rochester Institute of Technology Dubai and American University of Beirut have also moved their classes online.
