Iran's New Supreme Leader: Following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in an Israeli and US attack on Iran, the world's attention is focused on Iran's new leader. However, the name of Iran's new leader has not yet been announced
A successor to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a joint US-Israeli operation, has been found. Iran's powerful Assembly of Experts has reached a near-majority consensus on the country's next Supreme Leader. A formal announcement is pending.
Assembly member Ayatollah Mohammad Mehdi Mirbakheri said on Sunday that a substantial consensus has been reached on Iran's next leader. Iran's Mehr News Agency reported that most public opinion had been expressed. Some obstacles need to be cleared before the decision can be finalized.
What information has come to light so far?
A senior cleric in the 88-member Assembly of Experts said on Saturday that members would meet to elect the next leader of the Islamic Republic. Iranian media reported that there was controversy over the process required to formalize the assembly. Some members believe a formal in-person meeting is necessary. Ayatollah Mohsen Heydari Alekser said an in-person session is not possible right now.
Iranian media claims successor has been chosen
A video was also released by Noor News on Sunday. In it, he stated that the extraordinary situation has made a full meeting impractical. He stated that this is a very important matter. The Assembly cannot meet. Attempts to target the religious body will only benefit Iran's enemies and harm the revolution.
The process of selecting a leadership has been hampered by constant attacks and war. Since the war began on February 28, Israeli and US attacks have killed dozens of Iranian officials and military commanders, including Khamenei. Iranian media reported earlier this week that airstrikes had destroyed a subsidiary building belonging to the Assembly of Experts in the city of Qom.
Who will announce the new leader?
Iranian media, citing two panel members, Ayatollah Mohsen Heydari Aleksir and Ahmad Almolhoda, reported that the assembly had already chosen a successor. According to Almolhoda, Ayatollah Hashem Hosseini Bushehri, head of the assembly's secretariat, will publicly announce the decision.
What qualities should a Supreme Leader have?
Heydari Aleksir said the chosen candidate should match the qualities of the previous Supreme Leader regarding the qualities required for Iran's highest office. The new Supreme Leader must hate the enemy. Even the Great Satan has taken his name.
This statement comes after Trump said that Khamenei's son, Mojtaba Khamenei, was the most likely successor. However, Trump has refused to recognize him as Iran's new leader. Trump has expressed a desire to be personally involved in the process of selecting Iran's leader. Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, was not in Tehran when his father was killed in airstrikes during the war.
