India’s electric vehicle market is expanding at a remarkable pace. According to the latest data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), retail sales of passenger EVs surged by 57 percent in October, touching 18,055 units compared to 11,464 units in the same month last year. The numbers make it clear that demand for electric vehicles in India is accelerating rapidly.
Passenger EVs: Competition Heats Up
The passenger EV segment is witnessing intense competition. Tata Motors continues to dominate the market, recording sales of 7,239 units in October. While Tata posted a modest 10 percent year-on-year growth, other players are catching up fast.
MG Motor India delivered a standout performance, taking the second position with 4,549 units sold — a strong 63 percent YoY jump. However, the biggest leap came from Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), which skyrocketed from 955 units last year to 3,911 units this year.
Newer brands are also gaining traction. Kia sold around 656 units, while BYD recorded 570 units, signaling increasing competition in the segment.
Electric Two-Wheelers Slow Down
In contrast to passenger EVs, the electric two-wheeler market grew at a much slower pace. Sales in this segment increased only 3 percent, reaching 1,43,887 units. Bajaj Auto led the pack with 31,426 units, followed by TVS (29,515 units) and Ather Energy (28,101 units). Ola Electric recorded 16,036 units, remaining among the top performers.
Commercial EVs Record Massive Growth
The commercial EV segment saw the strongest surge. Sales soared by over 100 percent to 1,767 units, reflecting the rising shift toward electric mobility in logistics, delivery, and fleet operations. Meanwhile, the electric three-wheeler segment recorded 70,604 units, marking a steady 5 percent year-on-year growth.
