The year 2025 proved to be a turning point for India’s two-wheeler industry, bringing much-needed relief after a prolonged slowdown. According to data released by SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers), domestic two-wheeler sales crossed the 20 million-unit mark, registering a growth of nearly 5 percent compared to 2024.
While the industry has not yet surpassed its all-time high of 21 million units recorded in 2018, the overall momentum in 2025 clearly indicated a recovery phase.
Exports drive strong growth
A major highlight of 2025 was the sharp rise in two-wheeler exports. Overseas shipments surged by over 24 percent, reaching a record 4.94 million units.
This export boom was driven by:
-
Revival of demand in African markets
-
Continued orders from South Asian countries
-
Improved global demand for motorcycles
Exports played a bigger role than domestic sales in strengthening the industry during the year.
Hero MotoCorp leads, TVS shows fastest growth
Among manufacturers, Hero MotoCorp retained its leadership position. The company sold around 5.75 million units in 2025. However, its year-on-year growth remained modest at about 2 percent.
In contrast, TVS Motor Company emerged as the fastest-growing major player. TVS recorded an impressive 15.7 percent growth, with total sales reaching approximately 3.98 million units, reflecting strong demand across both domestic and export markets.
Scooters gain ground in cities
Consumer buying behaviour also showed noticeable changes in 2025:
-
Rural demand remained steady
-
Urban sales saw stronger growth
-
Scooters outperformed motorcycles in city markets
Higher disposable incomes, easier loan availability, and improved financing options boosted urban demand. Government measures such as GST relief, income tax benefits, and repo rate cuts further supported two-wheeler purchases.
Festive demand and outlook for 2026
The festive season provided a significant boost in the second half of the year. New product launches, rising interest in adventure motorcycles, and sustained demand in the entry-level segment helped keep sales momentum strong.
Industry experts expect these trends to continue into 2026, with further improvement driven by product innovation, export growth, and favourable economic conditions.
Bottom line
Indian two-wheelers are not just recovering at home but are also gaining strong traction globally. While Hero MotoCorp remains the market leader, fast-growing players like TVS Motor Company are intensifying competition—signalling an exciting phase ahead for the industry.
