While the world is still expanding 5G networks, India has made a major stride in 6G technology. IIT Hyderabad has successfully tested a 6G prototype in the 7 GHz band, marking a breakthrough in the country’s telecom research. The institute is leading India’s journey toward next-generation mobile networks in collaboration with various government institutions.
What Experts Say
Professor Kiran Kuchi, a leading telecommunications researcher at IIT Hyderabad, said, “India aims not just to be a participant but a key player in shaping 6G technology.” He added that 6G is expected to be rolled out by 2030.
High-Speed Internet Everywhere
6G promises ultra-fast connectivity for everyone, everywhere – from villages to cities, in the sky, on seas, and across land. According to Professor Kuchi, each decade brings a new generation of mobile technology:
-
5G was developed between 2010–2020 and began nationwide expansion in 2022
-
6G development started in 2021, with prototypes now successfully tested
India’s Technological Edge
IIT Hyderabad has also designed a low-power system chip for 6G. Work is underway on the 6GAI high-performance chip, which will power India’s 6G ecosystem. With this technology, India plans to move closer to the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, producing homegrown technologies, products, and networks as the world embraces 6G by 2030.
