Team India scripted history in the first ODI against New Zealand in Vadodara, earning the tag of the world’s ultimate “Chase King.” Powered by a classy knock from Virat Kohli, India chased down a 300-plus target yet again—achieving a feat no other team has managed in ODI cricket.
Kohli starred with a brilliant 93, narrowly missing out on what would have been his 54th ODI century. His innings anchored the chase and laid the foundation for India’s four-wicket win, giving the hosts a 1–0 lead in the series. Skipper Shubman Gill also played a vital role with a composed 56.
How the match unfolded
India won the toss and opted to bowl first in the opening ODI (IND vs NZ 1st ODI 2026). New Zealand put up a competitive total of 300 runs in their 50 overs, thanks to solid contributions from Devon Conway (56), Henry Nicholls (62), and Daryl Mitchell (84).
In reply, India looked firmly in control for most of the chase. However, after Kohli’s dismissal in the 40th over, the match briefly swung towards New Zealand as wickets began to fall in quick succession. Ravindra Jadeja and Shreyas Iyer departed early, turning the game into a tense finish.
With 67 runs needed from 66 balls at one stage, KL Rahul held his nerve, scoring an unbeaten 29. He stitched a crucial 37-run partnership with Harshit Rana (29) to steer India home.
A world record for Team India
This victory etched India’s name into the record books. India became the first team in ODI history to successfully chase targets of 300 or more on 20 occasions, underlining their dominance while batting second.
