A hair spa is more than just washing your hair and applying conditioner. It is a deep-care routine that can help improve the feel and appearance of dry, dull and rough hair.
A typical hair spa may include cleansing, oil or cream application, gentle massage, conditioning and steam. You don't always need to visit a salon for this. With a few basic products, you can create a simple hair-spa routine at home.
If your hair feels particularly dry, rough or lifeless, you can consider doing a deep-conditioning treatment. Depending on your hair type and the products you use, a treatment every few weeks may be sufficient.
Here's a simple step-by-step method to try at home.
What Do You Need for a Hair Spa?
Before starting, keep these things ready:
-
A mild shampoo
-
A wide-toothed comb
-
Hair clips
-
A clean towel or two
-
A shower cap
-
A hair-spa cream or deep-conditioning mask
-
A bowl or container for the treatment
-
Warm water
If you prefer a homemade hair mask, ingredients such as yogurt, honey or mashed avocado can also be used, provided they suit your hair and scalp.
Step 1: Wash Your Hair
Start by washing your hair with a mild shampoo. This helps remove dirt, excess oil and product buildup so that your conditioning treatment can be applied to clean hair.
Rinse thoroughly and gently squeeze out excess water. Avoid aggressively rubbing your hair with a towel.
Step 2: Detangle and Apply the Hair Spa Cream
Use a wide-toothed comb to gently detangle your hair while it is still slightly damp.
Divide your hair into several sections using clips. Apply your hair-spa cream or deep-conditioning product evenly through each section, concentrating mainly on the lengths and ends.
If you are prone to an oily scalp, avoid applying heavy products directly to the scalp.
Once the product has been applied, gently massage your scalp with your fingertips for a few minutes. Avoid scratching or using excessive pressure.
Step 3: Give Your Hair Gentle Steam
Steam can help soften the hair and make a conditioning treatment feel more effective.
Instead of using very hot towels, use a comfortably warm, damp towel and wrap it around your hair. Cover it with a shower cap if desired.
Leave the warm towel on for a few minutes, and repeat once or twice if necessary. The towel should always be comfortably warm, not hot enough to burn your scalp or skin.
You don't need to repeatedly expose your hair to very high heat.
Step 4: Deep Condition Your Hair
After the warm-towel treatment, apply a suitable deep-conditioning mask if you haven't already used one.
Leave the mask on according to the product's instructions. For a homemade mask, a short application period is generally sufficient.
You can use simple ingredients such as yogurt, honey or avocado, but avoid any ingredient that has previously irritated your scalp or skin.
Step 5: Rinse Thoroughly
Rinse your hair thoroughly with lukewarm or cool water until the product has been completely removed.
You usually don't need to shampoo again immediately after a deep-conditioning treatment unless the product instructions specifically recommend it.
Gently towel-dry your hair and allow it to dry naturally whenever possible.
How Often Should You Do a Hair Spa?
You don't necessarily need a hair spa every week. For many people, a deep-conditioning treatment every few weeks or about once a month is enough.
The ideal frequency depends on your hair type, scalp condition, chemical treatments and how dry or damaged your hair is.
Remember, a home hair spa can make hair feel softer, smoother and more manageable, but it cannot permanently repair severely damaged hair. For persistent hair fall, scalp problems or significant hair damage, it's better to consult a dermatologist.
