How Much Gas Does a 1.5 Ton AC Actually Have?

This is a very common confusion. The short answer is: there is no single fixed amount of gas (refrigerant) for every 1.5 ton AC. It varies depending on the model, brand, and type of refrigerant used.

Typical Gas Quantity in a 1.5 Ton AC

  • R32 refrigerant (newer ACs):
    Around 600–700 grams (0.6–0.7 kg)
  • R-410A refrigerant (older models):
Around 900 grams to 1.5 kg

So overall, a 1.5 ton AC usually contains between 600 grams to 1500 grams of gas.

Why Does the Gas Quantity Vary?

Even if the AC capacity is the same (1.5 ton), gas quantity changes because of:

  • Different refrigerants (R32 vs R-410A vs others)
  • Design of the AC (split AC, inverter, non-inverter)
  • Length of copper piping (longer pipes = more gas needed)
  • Brand and internal technology

That’s why two 1.5 ton ACs can have very different gas requirements.

Important Things Most People Don’t Know

  • Gas doesn’t get “used up” like fuel.
If it’s low, it usually means there’s a leak.
  • Simply refilling gas without fixing the leak = temporary solution.
  • Exact gas amount is always written on the AC nameplate or outdoor unit sticker (this is the most accurate source).

Cost of Gas Refilling

  • Typically ranges from ₹2,500 to ₹4,000
  • Depends on:
    • Type of gas
    • Quantity required
    • Service charges

Practical Advice

Before refilling:

  • Ask the technician to check for leakage first
  • Confirm which refrigerant your AC uses
  • Avoid “full refill” if only minor top-up is needed
