Hit on the Helmet, Floored on the Pitch — Jacob Bethell Rises to Score Maiden Test Century

England batter Jacob Bethell produced a moment of sheer grit and determination on Day 4 of the Sydney Test against Australia, scoring the first Test century of his career despite suffering a frightening blow to the head earlier in the innings.

Batting in England’s second innings, Bethell completed his hundred in 162 balls, striking 13 boundaries in a knock that will be remembered not just for the runs, but for the courage behind it.

Collapsed After Helmet Blow

The incident occurred during the 15th over of England’s second innings when Australian all-rounder Cameron Green delivered a sharp ball at 140.5 km/h. The delivery struck Bethell on the temple of his helmet, causing him to collapse on the pitch in visible discomfort.

Medical staff rushed in as Bethell lay on the ground, raising immediate concern among players and spectators. After receiving treatment, the England batter showed remarkable resolve, got back on his feet, and continued his innings.

Lunch Break Proves Crucial

Fortunately for Bethell, the blow came shortly before the lunch interval. The break allowed him time to recover and be monitored before resuming play. When he returned after lunch, he looked composed and focused, gradually rebuilding his innings and then accelerating toward a historic milestone.

By the time he reached three figures, Bethell had not only silenced doubts about his fitness but had also etched his name into the record books with his maiden Test century.

A Long-Awaited Milestone

Before this innings, Bethell’s highest Test score was 96, made against New Zealand in Wellington in 2024. Exactly 394 days later, he finally crossed the three-figure mark.

In just six Test matches so far, Bethell now has one century and three half-centuries, underlining his growing importance in England’s red-ball setup.
