Have Multiple SIM Cards in Your Name? New Rules Take Effect From August 24 — Check the Limit Now

If you have several mobile SIM cards registered in your name, you need to pay attention to the latest telecom rules. The government is tightening enforcement for customers who hold more mobile connections than the permitted limit.

From August 24, 2026, telecom operators will be required to put technical and administrative systems in place to identify customers who have already reached the prescribed limit. Such customers may not be allowed to obtain another mobile connection.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) issued the latest directions on August 17. Under the new process, if someone who has already reached the permitted limit applies for another SIM, the telecom operator will identify the customer and inform them that a new connection cannot be issued because the maximum limit has been reached.

How Many SIM Cards Can One Person Have?

The limit on mobile connections is not a new rule. Since August 9, 2012, an individual in India has generally been allowed to have up to nine mobile connections registered in their name.

However, a lower limit of six mobile connections applies in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, and the northeastern states.

Importantly, the limit applies across telecom operators and licensed service areas. So, if you have SIM cards from different companies, all of those connections will be counted toward your total.

How Will the Government Track Multiple Connections?

The DoT is using the Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) to strengthen monitoring. The platform will bring together information from different telecom operators, making it easier to determine how many mobile connections are registered to an individual.

When applying for a new SIM, customers may need to provide information about their existing mobile connections. This includes connections issued by other telecom operators and those registered in different licensed service areas.

Customer Photos Will Also Help With Verification

According to the DoT's directions, representative photographs of customers who have reached the prescribed limit will be available on the DIP from August 23.

Telecom companies can use this information as part of the verification process when processing new SIM applications. If the applicant is found to have already reached or exceeded the permitted number of connections, the request for an additional SIM may be rejected.

What Happens If You Exceed the Limit?

Telecom operators have been directed to integrate their systems and processes with the DIP by November 30, 2026.

If a customer's number of active mobile connections exceeds the permitted limit, the excess connection may be suspended while the matter is investigated or clarified. This makes it important for customers with several SIM cards to keep track of every connection registered in their name.

What Should You Do Now?

If you have used multiple SIM cards over the years, it is a good idea to check how many are currently registered in your name. You may have forgotten about old or unused connections that are still active.

Keeping only the mobile connections you actually need can help you avoid problems when applying for a new SIM and ensure that your connections remain within the prescribed limit.
