Harnessing the Sun: How to Apply for the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

With the Central Government heavily boosting the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana with a massive ₹5,000 crore funding increase in the recent Union Budget, there has never been a better time for Indian households to transition to solar energy.

The scheme aims to provide up to 300 units of free electricity per month to one crore households across India by subsidizing the installation of rooftop solar panels. If you want to eliminate your monthly power bill and earn money by selling excess power back to the grid, here is a practical guide on eligibility, subsidies, and how to apply.

The Subsidy Structure: What the Government Pays

The scheme offers substantial, direct financial assistance based on the capacity of the solar plant you install. The subsidy is credited directly to your bank account within 30 days of installation approval.

Plant Capacity Ideal For Central Subsidy Provided
1 kW Small homes (Monthly consumption < 150 units) ₹30,000
2 kW Medium homes (Monthly consumption 150–300 units) ₹60,000
3 kW or higher Large homes (Monthly consumption > 300 units) ₹78,000 (Maximum Cap)

Financial Impact: For a standard 2 kW system costing roughly ₹1,20,000, the government covers ₹60,000. The remaining ₹60,000 can be financed through low-interest, collateral-free bank loans explicitly tied to this scheme.

Essential Prerequisites Before Applying

Before logging into the national portal, ensure you have the following ready:

  1. An electricity connection in your name (or a family member's name).

  2. The latest copy of your Electricity Bill (you will need your Consumer Number).

  3. A clear, unshaded rooftop space (approximately 100 sq. ft. is required per kilowatt).

  4. An active bank account linked to your identification details for the direct subsidy transfer.

Step-by-Step Application Process

The entire registration and approval workflow has been digitized into a single national dashboard.

1.Registration on the Portal:Step 1.

Visit the official website (pmsuryaghar.gov.in). Select your State, your Electricity Distribution Company (DISCOM), and enter your Consumer Account Number found on your power bill. Verify your profile via mobile OTP.

2.Apply for Feasibility Approval:Step 2.

Once logged in, submit a formal application for "Rooftop Solar". Your DISCOM will evaluate your local grid infrastructure and issue a Feasibility Approval online. Do not purchase any equipment before this is granted.

3.Installation by Vendor:Step 3.

Once approved, select an empanelled vendor listed on the portal. They will install the solar plant using domestic manufacturing-compliant solar panels.

4.Net Metering & Commissioning:Step 4.

After installation, submit the work completion details on the portal and apply for a net meter. The DISCOM officers will inspect the setup, install the bidirectional net meter, and generate a Commissioning Certificate.

How the Return on Investment Works

Once the system is commissioned, it functions automatically. During the day, your home runs entirely on solar power, and any excess electricity generated is fed back into the government grid through the net meter.

At night, you draw power back from the grid. At the end of the billing cycle, your DISCOM subtracts your exported solar units from your imported grid units. If you generated more than you consumed, the surplus rolls over or is paid out directly to you, effectively dropping your power bill to zero.
