Hardik Pandya Cleared for Comeback, Called Up for South Africa T20 Series
India’s star all-rounder Hardik Pandya has officially cleared his fitness test and is set to rejoin the national squad for the five-match T20 series against South Africa. After proving his match readiness through domestic cricket, Pandya has been instructed by the BCCI to report to the team camp on December 6. As a result, he will leave the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) midway, marking his return to international cricket after a two-month injury layoff.
Pandya, who has been participating in the SMAT for Baroda, delivered impressive all-round performances in his comeback matches. His return has been closely monitored by the BCCI, and following approval from the Bengaluru-based Centre of Excellence, he has now been cleared to join the national squad immediately.
Hardik to Exit SMAT Early After BCCI Call-Up
Originally scheduled to play three matches for Baroda, Pandya had one more fixture remaining on December 6 against Haryana. However, the BCCI has asked him to reach Cuttack on the same day to join the Indian team ahead of the South Africa series. According to reports, the full squad, led by Suryakumar Yadav, is set to assemble on December 5.
Pandya had been out of action following a quadriceps injury, which forced him to miss the Asia Cup final, the Australia tour, and the ODI series against South Africa. His performances in domestic cricket have now reassured selectors and team management of his match fitness as India prepares for a crucial white-ball season.
High Demand for Hardik in Limited-Overs Format
Hardik’s value to India’s white-ball setup remains unmatched. His ability to bowl at 140 kmph, operate across different phases of the innings, and contribute with explosive batting makes him a key component of the T20 squad. With India prioritizing multi-dimension players in limited-overs formats, Pandya’s availability brings much-needed balance and depth to the lineup.
His absence during recent series highlighted the challenge of not having a suitable backup for a fast-bowling all-rounder of his caliber. As the 2026 T20 World Cup approaches, managing Hardik’s workload and ensuring his fitness will remain a major focus for team management.
Standout Performances in SMAT Before Call-Up
Hardik showcased his form with both bat and ball in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy:
-
Against Punjab:
He took 1 wicket for 52 runs in four overs and then blasted an unbeaten 77 off 42 deliveries, guiding Baroda to a successful chase of 223 with five balls to spare. -
Against Gujarat:
Pandya bowled brilliantly, conceding just 16 runs in four overs and picking up one wicket. Baroda, however, collapsed for 72. Chasing a modest target, he scored 10 runs off 6 balls before being dismissed.
These performances not only marked his return but also demonstrated that he is regaining rhythm, power, and confidence—essential components for his international comeback.
Concerns Ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup
While Pandya’s selection brings relief, his fitness remains a concern for team management. Frequent injuries have kept him out of action on multiple occasions, making his availability unpredictable. India’s lack of a like-for-like replacement heightens the importance of his role, especially in high-pressure tournaments.
Pandya, who can bat in the middle order and bowl in powerplay, death overs, and middle phases, remains India’s most versatile white-ball asset. With the World Cup less than a year away, India will look to manage him cautiously to ensure peak performance when it matters the most.
