Government employees contribute a portion of their salary to the General Provident Fund (GPF) every month. This is done so that the money can be used in the future. But if a government employee dies, who will receive the money in the GPF account? The family or the nominee? The central government has outlined the necessary rules regarding this.
The Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions issued an official order on
October 29, 2026, detailing who will receive GPF funds after an employee's death. The rules specify who should receive the funds if the employee did not receive their GPF funds before death and died before the balance was credited to the account.
Who benefits from GPF?
GPF, or General Provident Fund, is a savings scheme for government employees. Employees covered under the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) can benefit from this scheme. However, employees covered under the NPS and UPS schemes are not eligible for GPF benefits.
Who will get the money after the death of the employee?
If an employee has nominated a family member, the GPF funds will be distributed to that person upon his or her death. If there are more than one nominee, the amount will be distributed according to the amount specified in the form. However, if the employee has not nominated any family member, the GPF funds will be distributed equally among the eligible family members. Furthermore, a nomination made in the name of an outsider will not be accepted if there is an eligible family member.
Which families will not receive the money?
The government has set some rules for receiving GPF money. According to this, these people will not get a share of this amount. Sons above 18 years of age, married daughters whose husbands are alive, hence not every member of the family will receive GPF money. For this, one must be eligible as per government rules. Also, if a government employee's son dies before him, then that son's wife and children can also receive GPF money.

What checks will be made before disbursing GPF funds?
Before releasing GPF funds after an employee's death, the office head or accounts officer will check all documents. This will include verifying the employee's GPF account, job details, and nominee's name. It will also be determined who is eligible to receive the funds. Only after all checks are completed will the funds be released to the concerned individuals.
