Students from economically weaker families have received some extra time to apply for a central government scholarship for the 2026-27 academic year. The Ministry of Education has extended the application deadline for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) to September 30, 2026.

What is the NMMSS scholarship?

The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme provides ₹12,000 per year to selected students.

Who can apply?

The scholarship is primarily intended for students from economically weaker sections who demonstrate academic merit.

For the 2026-27 cycle, the eligibility conditions include:

• The student's parental income should not exceed ₹3.50 lakh per year.

• The student should have secured at least 55% marks, or an equivalent grade, in the Class 7 examination.

• The 55% requirement is relaxed by 5 percentage points for SC/ST students.

• Students must be studying in a State Government, Government-aided or local body school.

• Students need to qualify through the selection examination conducted by their respective State or Union Territory.

How much money does the student receive?

Selected students receive ₹12,000 annually.

The amount is intended to help families meet some of the educational expenses associated with continuing school education up to the higher secondary level.

The scholarship is not paid as a lump-sum cash benefit through an offline process. It is transferred electronically through the government payment system.

Where should students apply?

Applications are submitted through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP).

Students applying for the 2026-27 academic year are required to complete a one-time registration on the portal before applying for the scholarship scheme.

The government has advised eligible students to complete their applications within the revised deadline.

However, submitting the application is not the final step. Applications also have to go through verification.

The current schedule is:

• Institute-level verification: October 15, 2026

• District-level verification: October 31, 2026
