Google has introduced a new category of laptops called Googlebook, bringing together elements of Android and ChromeOS in an effort to create a new kind of AI-powered personal computer.

The first Googlebook laptops have been developed with Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo. Pre-orders have opened in the US and select international markets, while Google has not yet confirmed an India launch.

What is a Googlebook?

Googlebook is designed to combine the Android technology ecosystem with the desktop experience traditionally associated with ChromeOS.

The laptops support native Android applications through Google Play while retaining desktop features such as the Chrome browser and browser extensions. This means users can access familiar Android apps while using the device in a conventional laptop environment.

Gemini AI is at the centre

Artificial intelligence is one of the biggest highlights of the new platform.

Google has designed Googlebook around Gemini, allowing AI features to become a more integrated part of the laptop experience. The company is positioning these devices as computers that can assist with everyday tasks rather than simply running traditional applications.

The platform is also designed to work closely with Android smartphones.

Your Android phone can connect directly

Googlebook aims to make the transition between an Android smartphone and laptop more seamless.

During setup, users can transfer information such as settings, saved passwords, Wi-Fi networks and messages from their Android phone to a Googlebook. Google says this information is protected using end-to-end encryption.

This could make switching to a new Googlebook considerably easier for Android users.

New AI-powered features

Googlebook laptops are also expected to offer several Gemini-powered tools designed specifically for desktop use.

Features include tools such as Magic Pointer, Rambler and Create My Widget, which are intended to make interacting with information and customising the computing experience more convenient.

The platform is therefore being positioned not simply as another laptop operating system, but as an AI-focused computing environment.

How much do Googlebook laptops cost?

The first Googlebook models have opened for pre-orders with prices starting at around $899, or roughly ₹80,000 based on current conversions. Shipping is scheduled to begin in October in the initial markets.

Google has not yet announced when these laptops will be available in India.

Google promises long-term software support

Another notable aspect of the new platform is its long software-support commitment. Googlebook devices are expected to receive operating-system updates for up to 10 years.

Long-term software support could become an important selling point as consumers increasingly expect laptops to remain usable for several years.

Could Googlebook change the laptop market?

Googlebook enters a laptop market that is increasingly being shaped by artificial intelligence. Instead of treating AI as a separate application, Google is attempting to build it directly into the computing experience.

The combination of Android apps, desktop browsing, smartphone integration and Gemini AI could make Googlebook an interesting alternative to conventional Chromebooks and Windows laptops.

For Indian consumers, however, the bigger question remains unanswered: when will Googlebook laptops officially arrive in India, and at what price?

For now, Google has confirmed the new platform and initial international availability, but an India launch date has not been announced.
