Elon Musk’s rise to becoming one of the world’s richest individuals is often linked to innovation and risk-taking—but a lesser-known chapter of his journey reveals how rejection played a defining role in shaping his path.
Before launching his own ventures, Musk had no initial plans to become an entrepreneur. During the early days of the internet boom, he was actively seeking a job and had set his sights on Netscape, one of the most prominent tech companies of that era. However, despite sending his resume, Musk never received a response.
In a resurfaced video that is now gaining attention, Musk recalls how even a direct attempt to connect failed. He visited the Netscape office and waited in the lobby, hoping to speak with someone, but hesitated to initiate a conversation. The experience left him disappointed and forced him to reconsider his approach.
Rather than giving up, Musk turned the setback into an opportunity. Realizing he could not secure a role in an existing internet company, he decided to create his own path. This led him to start his first venture, marking the beginning of a journey that would eventually include companies like PayPal, Tesla, and SpaceX.
Musk has often emphasized that his decision to build something of his own was not driven by ambition alone, but by a desire to be part of the rapidly evolving internet industry. In hindsight, the rejection from Netscape became a turning point—one that pushed him toward entrepreneurship and ultimately laid the foundation for his extraordinary success.
