Europe is currently in the grip of a severe heatwave. The scorching heat is not only affecting people's health, but also the economy and infrastructure. Western Europe's rail network has collapsed completely. Roads are melting .
Many nuclear reactors in France have been shut down or their capacity significantly reduced because they were releasing hot water into rivers.
Somewhere there is a strike and somewhere there is a competition to buy AC.
Union leaders at an automobile plant in France have called a strike, citing unbearable heat on the factory floor. Power plant shutdowns in France and Italy have affected electricity supplies to hundreds of areas.

If this heat wave continues, the economies of many European countries could be affected and the death rate could rise. The situation is even more serious in cities.

Furnace being built in house- apartment
Old buildings with thick walls absorb heat throughout the day and release it at night, making apartments like furnaces.
People troubled by the heat are flocking to parks after midnight. There's a rush to buy air conditioners. Many are even staying in hotels for relief.
Temperature records broken in many countries
Numerous temperature records have been broken in Britain, France and Spain. Much of the world's fastest-warming continent's buildings and infrastructure were designed with colder climates in mind.
Older houses use heat-absorbing construction materials and lack external shutters, trapping heat within the buildings, further exacerbating the problems.

These countries suffer the most
The German insurance company Allianz reported that Italy, France, Germany, and Spain suffered the most economic losses due to the heatwave. Temperatures rose so high that the reactors at four nuclear power plants in France had to be shut down.
Cardiac arrest cases have increased fourfold.
According to French Health Minister Stéphane Rist, the extreme heat has caused a fourfold increase in cardiac arrest cases. Previously, there were 5 to 10 cases, but now there are 20 to 30. A 2023 study suggests that the risk of heat-related death is higher in France, Spain, and Italy.

Several trains cancelled in Germany, Britain
The heatwave in Europe has led to the cancellation of many trains in Germany, Switzerland and Britain. In some other countries, train onboard systems are failing to cope with the heat.

In Leipzig, the extreme temperatures caused the sealant used around tram tracks to melt. It seeped into the rails and track switches before hardening into large clumps.

France released a 388-page plan last year with 52 measures. London unveiled a heatwave plan this week.
