EPFO Passbook Portal Restored: PF Members Can Check Balance Again as UAN Activation Process Changes

EPFO Passbook Portal Update: The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has restored its Passbook Portal after nearly two weeks of maintenance, allowing millions of provident fund (PF) subscribers to access their account statements once again. The portal had remained unavailable since the last week of June due to system upgrades and maintenance activities.

Along with the portal's return, EPFO has introduced a significant change to the Universal Account Number (UAN) activation process, requiring new users to complete activation through a mobile-based verification method instead of the web portal.

EPFO Passbook Portal Is Live Again

PF account holders can now log in to the EPFO Passbook Portal to view their contribution history, account balance, and transaction details.

The service had been temporarily suspended as part of EPFO's ongoing technology modernization initiative. With the portal back online, members can once again monitor their provident fund accounts without waiting for further updates.

The restoration comes at an important time, as EPFO is expected to begin crediting the annual EPF interest for FY 2025–26 at 8.25% from around July 15, enabling members to verify interest credits through their passbooks once they are processed.

Recent Financial Data Available First

After logging into the portal, users may notice an information message stating that recent financial years' transactions and balances are currently available.

EPFO has clarified that data from older financial years is still being migrated to the upgraded system. Historical records will gradually become available over the coming days, and subscribers are not required to take any additional action.

Website-Based UAN Activation Has Been Discontinued

One of the biggest changes introduced during the system upgrade relates to UAN activation.

Previously, employees could activate their Universal Account Number through the EPFO Unified Member Portal using the official website. Following the latest upgrade, this web-based activation facility has been discontinued.

Users attempting to activate their UAN through the website are now shown a notification indicating that the service is no longer available online through the portal.

New Method to Activate UAN

EPFO has shifted the entire UAN activation process to a mobile-based system to strengthen security and improve identity verification.

The updated process requires users to:

Download the UMANG App

Subscribers must install the UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) app on their smartphones to begin the activation process.

Complete Aadhaar-Based Face Authentication

The new activation method requires Face Authentication Technology (FAT) linked with Aadhaar.

Instead of traditional website verification, users must complete facial authentication through the UMANG app. Once identity verification is successfully completed, the UAN activation process can proceed.

According to EPFO, this approach is intended to enhance account security and reduce the risk of identity-related fraud.

Part of EPFO's Digital Modernization Initiative

The changes are part of EPFO's broader technology upgrade aimed at modernizing its digital infrastructure.

The upgraded Unified Member Portal, introduced in phases from July 3, is designed to:

  • Improve system security

  • Enhance portal stability and performance

  • Provide a smoother digital experience

  • Strengthen identity verification

  • Reduce technical issues faced by subscribers

Although older transaction history may take some time to appear, members can already access recent contribution records and account information through the restored portal.

Why This Update Matters for PF Members

With annual EPF interest expected to be credited soon, restoring the passbook portal allows subscribers to monitor:

  • Monthly employer and employee contributions

  • Updated PF account balance

  • Interest credited for FY 2025–26

  • Recent transaction history

  • Account statements for financial planning

Members who have not yet activated their UAN should now complete the process through the UMANG app using Aadhaar-based facial authentication, as the website-based activation option is no longer available.
