ENG vs PAK: 19-Year-Old Test Debutant Set for Comeback After 5 Years, Sam Curran Gets Another Chance in England Team

England cricket is entering a new phase after the retirement of Ben Stokes and the departure of head coach Brendon McCullum. As the team prepares for the upcoming three-Test series against Pakistan starting August 19, a familiar name could soon make a comeback.

Star all-rounder Sam Curran may return to Test cricket after a five-year absence. The England selectors have kept the door open for his inclusion in the third Test of the series, depending on his fitness.

Five Years Later, Sam Curran’s Test Comeback Possible

England selector Marcus North revealed that Curran was not included in the squad for the first two Tests against Pakistan only because of fitness concerns.

Curran made his Test debut at just 19 years of age and played 24 Test matches for England between 2018 and 2021. However, over the last five years, he has mainly focused on limited-overs cricket.

With Ben Stokes no longer available, England are looking for a player who can provide balance with both bat and ball, and Curran is being considered a strong option.

England Looking for Stokes’ Replacement

Ben Stokes played a crucial role in England’s Test setup by contributing as an all-rounder and giving the team extra balance.

Marcus North said that Curran is an important player for England and could become a key part of the side if he reaches full fitness.

He explained that Curran has played a lot of cricket recently and has also dealt with minor injury issues. The team’s medical and support staff will work with him in the coming weeks to make him available as a possible option for the third Test.

Fully Fit Curran Would Have Made the Squad

North also admitted that if Sam Curran had been completely fit, he would have been included in the squad for the opening two Tests.

He could have been a strong contender to replace Dan Lawrence as an all-rounder at number six or seven. Lawrence himself is returning after a two-year gap and is expected to take over Stokes’ position while also providing an off-spin option.

Injury Concerns Have Delayed His Return

Curran has had a busy cricket schedule this season but has struggled with fitness problems.

He missed this year’s IPL due to a thigh injury. After recovering, he returned as a batsman in the T20 Blast and gradually increased his bowling workload.

He also played in the ODI series against India, completing his full 10-over bowling spell in both matches. However, he missed a recent game in The Hundred because of a minor injury and did not bowl in another match.

A Big Opportunity Ahead

If Sam Curran proves his fitness before the third Test, England could bring back a player who has already shown his ability on the international stage.

With the team searching for a new balance after Stokes’ retirement, Curran’s return could become an important part of England’s next Test chapter.
