ENG vs NZ: Heavy Blow for England at The Oval – 12 Points Lost, Half Match Fee Cut After Crushing Defeat

England suffered a double setback after their 253-run defeat against New Zealand in the Oval Test, with both financial penalties and World Test Championship consequences hitting the team hard.

New Zealand outclassed England in the second Test at The Oval, setting a massive target of 463 runs. England collapsed in the chase and were bowled out for just 209, handing the visitors a dominant victory. Fast bowler Matt Henry starred with a match-winning 11-wicket haul, including five wickets in the first innings and six in the second.

Beyond the defeat, England were also penalised for a slow over rate. The team was found to be 12 overs short of the required quota, leading to a deduction of 12 World Test Championship points and a fine of 50% of their match fee.

Match referee Andy Pycroft imposed the sanctions after on-field officials Adrian Holdstock, Nitin Menon, third umpire Rod Tucker, and fourth umpire Graham Lloyd reported the delay. England captain Joe Root accepted the charge, avoiding a formal hearing.

The impact on the World Test Championship standings has been significant. England’s points dropped to 38, pushing them down to seventh place, while their points percentage fell sharply from 34.72 to 26.38.
