Do you always have gas in your stomach and smelly farts? Could liver damage be the cause?

If you frequently experience gas in your stomach, smelly farts, and poor digestion, it could be due to a liver problem. If you have a fatty liver or your liver isn't functioning properly, it can lead to digestive problems.

Do you often have gas in your stomach?

Do you feel heaviness in your stomach even after eating light food?

Do you have smelly farts frequently?

If this is the case, then it could be that your liver is not functioning properly. When our liver does not function properly, toxins start accumulating in the body and digestion-related problems trouble us. Liver problems can also be the reason behind stomach-related problems, people are often unaware of this, but in reality, there is a direct connection between liver, gut health and digestion. Let us know from an expert how liver problems can be the reason for excessive gas formation in the stomach. Dr. KS Somasekhar Rao, Senior Consultant Gastroenterologist, Hepatologist, Clinical Director, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad is giving information about this.

Liver problems may be the reason behind excessive gas formation in the stomach.

  • Experts say that if you experience gas every other day, it could be a sign of liver disease. Dr. Rao says he sees many patients who complain of persistent gas and suffer from bloating, gas formation, or a feeling of fullness even after eating a small amount of food. Patients often mistake this for a common digestive problem, such as a food allergy, overeating, or indigestion. While persistent gas isn't usually a gastrointestinal problem, these factors can be. Importantly, it could be a sign of an underlying liver disease, and ignoring it could delay treatment and worsen health.
  • Our liver produces bile juice and is the body's metabolic powerhouse, breaking down lipids. When the liver isn't functioning properly, the production and flow of bile juice is affected.
  • For example, liver cirrhosis, hepatitis, and fatty liver, or early liver fibrosis, can cause this condition. Fats are not digested properly in the intestines, leading to poor digestion and fermenting of undigested food, resulting in increased gas production.
  • Symptoms like bloating, belching, abdominal discomfort, and frequent bowel movements are similar to those of common digestive problems. However, liver-related gas is often accompanied by fatigue, jaundice (yellowing of the skin), dark urine, or unexplained weight loss, which is different from typical IBS or acid reflux.
  • Most people mistake non-alcoholic fatty liver, a condition caused by obesity, diabetes, and an unhealthy lifestyle, for normal gas, which is not true. Experts advise avoiding excessive antacids or self-medicating if you experience gas.
  • If gas persists for more than two weeks and is affecting your daily activities, consult a doctor.
