Chitragupta Puja 2025: Why Chitragupta Is Worshipped and Its Significance

Bhai Dooj 2025, falling tomorrow, also marks Chitragupta Puja according to Sanatan Dharma scriptures. Chitragupta is revered as the assistant of Yamraj, the god of death, and is believed to maintain the records of all beings born on Earth. For this reason, pens, inkpots, and ledgers are worshipped on this day, giving it the alternate name Masyadhar Puja (Pen and Inkpot Worship).

Mythological Belief
Legend says Chitragupta was born on the second day of the bright fortnight of Kartik and emerged from the mind of Lord Brahma. He serves not only as Yamraj’s assistant but also as the divine accountant of the gods, keeping track of the deeds of all living beings.

Connection with Bhai Dooj / Yam Dwitiya
It is believed that pleased with the hospitality shown by his sister Yamuna, Yamraj granted her a boon: any brother who visits his sister on Bhai Dooj (Yam Dwitiya), receives a tilak on the forehead, and eats food prepared by her will be protected from premature death. Since Chitragupta assists Yamraj, he is worshipped on this day as well.

Blessings of Chitragupta Puja
Worshipping Chitragupta on Bhai Dooj is said to bestow knowledge, wisdom, courage, and writing skills. It also enhances the potential for business success and overall progress in life. Pens, inkpots, and account books are ceremoniously revered to honor his role as the divine record-keeper.
