Fever is a common symptom of many infections, and cases of viral illness often increase during the monsoon season. While some people experience chills and shivering, others may feel unusually hot and uncomfortable.
During this time, many people wonder whether taking a bath is safe. Some believe bathing can make a fever worse, while others find a shower refreshing and comforting.
So, should you actually take a bath when you have a fever?
Experts say bathing isn't completely off-limits during a fever, but the temperature of the water and your overall condition matter.
Is bathing during a fever safe?
Dr. RR Dutta, Principal Director of Internal Medicine at Paras Health, Gurugram, says there is no blanket rule that a person with a fever must avoid bathing. However, it's important to consider how you are feeling and avoid exposing the body to sudden temperature changes.
If the fever is mild and you are otherwise feeling stable, a short bath can be considered.
Lukewarm water is the better choice
If you have a mild fever and aren't experiencing dizziness, severe chills or extreme weakness, a quick bath with lukewarm water may help you feel more comfortable.
However, extremely cold or very hot water should be avoided. Sudden exposure to cold water can trigger shivering, while very hot water can make you uncomfortable and potentially worsen dehydration or weakness.
The goal isn't to dramatically lower your body temperature. Instead, the bath should simply help you feel more comfortable.
Don't spend too long in the bathroom
When you have a fever, your body needs plenty of rest and fluids. That's why a long bath isn't advisable.
If you decide to bathe, keep it brief. Once you're finished, dry yourself thoroughly with a towel and put on comfortable clothes. Then get some rest and continue drinking enough fluids.
If standing for a shower makes you feel weak or dizzy, it's better to avoid it and rest instead.
When should you avoid bathing and seek medical advice?
A bath isn't a treatment for the underlying cause of a fever. If you develop concerning symptoms, don't rely on a shower or home remedies alone.
Seek medical attention if the fever is accompanied by symptoms such as:
-
Difficulty breathing
-
Persistent vomiting
-
Confusion or unusual drowsiness
-
Severe headache
-
Stiff neck
-
Severe weakness or other worrying symptoms
In such situations, getting appropriate medical evaluation is more important than trying to manage the fever through bathing.
The bottom line
Having a fever doesn't automatically mean you have to avoid bathing. If your fever is mild and you feel well enough, a short lukewarm bath can be fine.
Avoid very hot or very cold water, don't stay in the bathroom for long, stay hydrated and prioritise rest. And if the fever is high or accompanied by serious symptoms, speak to a doctor rather than relying on bathing for relief.
