Shah Rukh Khan, the undisputed "King of Bollywood," has spent nearly three and a half decades dominating the box office with historic blockbusters. Yet, even the King isn't immune to failure. Two of the most critically acclaimed movies of his career actually tanked at the box office, failing to even recover their budgets upon release.
Today, these two films are celebrated as timeless masterpieces and definitive highlights of his cinematic legacy.
1. Dil Se.. (1998) – Preity Zinta's Spectacular Debut
Directed by the legendary Mani Ratnam, Dil Se.. featured Shah Rukh Khan as Amarkant Mehra, an intense All India Radio journalist, alongside Manisha Koirala. The film also famously marked the Bollywood debut of Preity Zinta, who left a lasting impression in a memorable supporting role.
Despite its hauntingly beautiful music, striking cinematography, and deep themes, the Indian box office completely rejected it at the time.

Estimated Budget: ₹11 crore
-
Domestic Box Office Collection: ₹10.77 crore
-
Status: Flop (Later became a global cult classic)
2. Swades (2004) – The Patriotic Masterpiece
Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, Swades featured SRK in one of his finest, most grounded performances as Mohan Bhargava, a NASA scientist who returns to his roots in rural India. The film paired him with newcomer Gayatri Joshi.
Though widely considered today as one of the greatest Indian films ever made, its slow pacing and unconventional narrative failed to attract theatre audiences in 2004.
-
Estimated Budget: ₹22 crore
-
Domestic Net Collection: ₹16.31 crore
-
Status: Flop (Now universally regarded as a cinematic triumph)
What's Next for the King?
While Dil Se.. and Swades proved that commercial failure doesn't define artistic greatness, Shah Rukh Khan is currently gearing up for his next massive theatrical venture.
He is collaborating with director Siddharth Anand for the highly anticipated action thriller "King," which will also feature his daughter, Suhana Khan. Scheduled for a theatrical release on December 24th, the star-studded film boasts an ensemble cast including Abhishek Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Rani Mukerji, Deepika Padukone, and Jaideep Ahlawat.
