Aamir Khan's Ghajini remains one of Bollywood's most iconic action thrillers, but very few people know that the film almost had a completely different leading man. Before Aamir Khan stepped into the role of Sanjay Singhania, the part was reportedly offered to Salman Khan. However, the collaboration never materialised, and the film eventually became one of the biggest milestones of Aamir's career.
Salman Khan recently recalled the incident, revealing why he could not be a part of the blockbuster. His candid remarks have once again sparked interest in one of Bollywood's most fascinating casting stories.
How Salman Khan Missed the Film
Ghajini, directed by A.R. Murugadoss, was the Hindi remake of the director's successful Tamil film of the same name. Actor Pradeep Rawat, who played the antagonist in the Tamil version, was also cast as the villain in the Hindi adaptation.
During the planning stages, Murugadoss reportedly asked Pradeep Rawat to suggest a suitable Bollywood actor for the lead role. Since Rawat shared a good rapport with Salman Khan, the director initially considered approaching him for the film.
However, according to Pradeep Rawat, he advised against the casting. He explained that Murugadoss was not fluent in Hindi at the time and communicated primarily in English. Rawat felt that the language barrier, combined with Salman's outspoken personality, might make the collaboration challenging.
Why Aamir Khan Became the Perfect Choice
Instead, Pradeep Rawat suggested Aamir Khan for the role. He believed Aamir's calm, methodical approach and attention to detail would suit the demanding character of Sanjay Singhania.
Rawat reportedly encouraged Aamir to watch the original Tamil film before making a decision. After viewing it, Aamir was so impressed with the story that he immediately agreed to star in the Hindi remake.
A Role That Became Bollywood History
Released in 2008, Ghajini featured Aamir Khan as businessman Sanjay Singhania, who suffers from short-term memory loss and embarks on a relentless quest for revenge. His physical transformation, intense performance, and the film's gripping narrative earned widespread praise from audiences and critics alike.
The film went on to become a massive box-office success, setting new commercial benchmarks and redefining the action thriller genre in Bollywood. It also popularised Aamir Khan's signature buzz-cut look, which became a nationwide trend.
While fans can only imagine how Ghajini might have looked with Salman Khan in the lead, Aamir Khan's portrayal ultimately became one of the most memorable performances of his career, proving that sometimes unexpected casting decisions create cinematic history.
