Bihar Hijab Controversy: CM Nitish Kumar Avoids Media Questions After Arriving in Delhi Amid Row

Bihar Hijab Controversy: The controversy surrounding Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and an alleged incident involving a Muslim woman doctor’s hijab continues to intensify. On Sunday, as the Chief Minister arrived at Delhi airport, he chose to avoid answering questions from journalists regarding the ongoing hijab row, further fueling political and public debate.

The issue erupted after a video clip went viral on social media, allegedly showing Nitish Kumar lowering the hijab of a Muslim woman during a government appointment event in Patna. The woman, identified as Dr Nusrat Parveen, had reportedly come to collect her appointment letter as an AYUSH doctor at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat.

What Triggered the Hijab Controversy?

According to reports, the incident took place during an official ceremony where appointment letters were being distributed to newly selected AYUSH doctors. Dr Nusrat Parveen was among the ten doctors invited to receive their letters.

When her name was announced, it is alleged that the Chief Minister walked towards her, pointed at her hijab, and asked, “What is this?” Moments later, he appeared to lower the hijab, revealing her face in front of the audience. The video clip, widely shared online, sparked sharp criticism from opposition leaders, civil rights activists, and sections of the public.

Critics accused the Chief Minister of showing insensitivity towards Muslim religious practices, particularly those related to women’s attire and personal choice. Many argued that such an act, if true, violated personal dignity and religious freedom.

Nitish Kumar Reaches Delhi, Declines Comment

Amid the growing backlash, Nitish Kumar arrived in Delhi on Sunday. When reporters attempted to question him about the hijab controversy at the airport, he refused to respond and walked away without offering any clarification or statement.

His silence has added to the political tension, with opposition parties questioning why the Chief Minister has not directly addressed the matter or issued a public explanation.

Political and Legal Reactions Intensify

The incident has not remained limited to political criticism. Iltija Mufti, a political activist, has reportedly filed a police complaint against Nitish Kumar in this matter. In her complaint submitted to the Kothibagh police station, she described the incident as “deeply objectionable” and alleged that it had hurt the sentiments of Muslims, especially Muslim women.

The complaint stated that publicly interfering with a woman’s religious attire during a government function created fear, anxiety, and distress among minority communities. It further claimed that such actions could discourage Muslim women from participating freely in public and professional spaces.

Opposition leaders have also accused the ruling party of attempting to normalize interference in personal religious practices, calling the incident politically and morally troubling.

Impact on the Woman Doctor’s Joining

Meanwhile, questions have also been raised about Dr Nusrat Parveen’s professional situation following the incident. According to officials, she did not report for duty until 7 pm on Saturday, which was the original last date for joining.

Patna Civil Surgeon Avinash Kumar Singh confirmed that the deadline for joining duty has now been extended. Speaking to the media, he said that the authorities are awaiting clarity on whether Dr Parveen will join duty on the revised date.

“I have been informed that the joining deadline has been extended beyond December 20. It will now be seen whether she joins duty on Monday or not,” the Civil Surgeon said. He also added that, as of now, officials are not aware of the exact reason behind her delay in joining.

Wider Debate on Sensitivity and Governance

The controversy has reopened a broader discussion on religious freedom, women’s rights, and sensitivity in public office. Social media platforms continue to see heated debates, with many users demanding accountability and a clear response from the Chief Minister.

Supporters of Nitish Kumar have argued that the incident has been misinterpreted, while critics insist that public figures must be especially careful when dealing with matters of personal faith and identity.

What Lies Ahead?

As the debate continues, all eyes remain on whether Nitish Kumar will break his silence and address the controversy directly. With legal complaints filed, political pressure mounting, and public scrutiny growing, the hijab row is unlikely to die down anytime soon.

The incident has once again highlighted how a single moment at a public event can trigger nationwide debate, especially in a politically and socially sensitive environment.
