Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday shared photographs from his visits to the Somnath Temple as the Somnath Swabhiman Parv commenced in Gujarat.
In a post on social media, the Prime Minister wrote, “Jai Somnath! The Somnath Swabhiman Parv begins today.” Recalling history, he said that in January 1026, the Somnath Temple faced the first attack in its history, followed by several others over the centuries. “Neither the attack of 1026 nor the many attacks that followed could shake our eternal faith. Instead, they strengthened India’s cultural unity, and Somnath continued to be rebuilt time and again,” he said.
PM Modi invited people who have visited Somnath to share their memories using the hashtag #SomnathSwabhimanParv.
Inspiration for National Unity
Describing the Swabhiman Parv as a moment of remembrance, PM Modi said the festival honours countless sons of Mother India who never compromised on their principles and values, even in the most difficult and frightening times. “Their devotion to our civilisation and cultural consciousness remained unwavering. A thousand years of steadfast faith inspires us to keep striving for national unity,” he added.
Remembering the 1951 Renovation and 2001 Celebrations
The Prime Minister also shared glimpses from an event held at Somnath on October 31, 2001, marking 50 years since the inauguration of the renovated temple in 1951. He recalled that the historic ceremony in 1951 took place in the presence of then President Rajendra Prasad.
PM Modi highlighted the pivotal role played by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and K. M. Munshi in the reconstruction of the temple. He noted that the 2001 programme was attended by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Home Minister L. K. Advani, and several other dignitaries.
Looking ahead, PM Modi said that in 2026, the nation will also commemorate the 75th anniversary of the grand inauguration ceremony held in 1951.
