Asia Cup 2025: Pakistani Players Cite Dhoni and Kohli to Defend Controversial Celebrations

The India-Pakistan Super Four match in the Asia Cup 2025 sparked controversy after Pakistani batsman Sahibzada Farhan performed a gunshot celebration following his half-century, while teammate Haris Rauf made a downed-plane gesture. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) filed a complaint with the ICC against both players, prompting a hearing on September 26.

Sahibzada Farhan’s Defense
During the ICC hearing, Farhan explained that his gunshot gesture was a personal celebration rooted in Pathan culture, commonly used in happy events like weddings, with no political motive. To bolster his defense, he referenced former Indian captains MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, claiming they had performed similar celebratory gestures in past matches. While Farhan could still face a fine amounting to a portion of his match fee, a ban appears unlikely.

Haris Rauf’s Statement
Haris Rauf also defended his controversial “6-0” gesture and the joking reference to shooting down a fighter jet, asserting that it was unrelated to India or any political context. ICC officials reportedly found no concrete evidence of wrongdoing in his case, suggesting he may avoid penalties.

This incident highlights the thin line between cultural expression and cricketing decorum in high-stakes India-Pakistan matches, with the ICC opting for a measured approach in assessing the actions of both players.
