Apple may be preparing a major upgrade for its AirPods lineup, with new models reportedly featuring built-in cameras. A leaked video has offered an early glimpse of how the technology could work, showing the AirPods using their cameras to understand objects around the user and provide information through Apple's Visual Intelligence features.
Unlike a conventional camera designed primarily for taking pictures, the cameras on these AirPods are reportedly intended to work with artificial intelligence and help Siri understand what the user is looking at.
Camera AirPods Spotted in a macOS Update
References to the upcoming AirPods have reportedly been discovered in the macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate.
A short demonstration video shows a person holding a book in front of the AirPods. The camera identifies the book's title, after which Apple's Visual Intelligence system provides information about the object.
The software also reportedly contains references to a device with the codename B790, which has previously been associated with Apple's plans for camera-equipped AirPods.
One of the references reportedly relates specifically to setting up Visual Intelligence on the AirPods.
The Camera Isn't Just for Taking Photos
The most interesting aspect of the reported AirPods isn't simply the addition of a camera.
Instead, the camera appears to be designed primarily to provide visual information to Apple's AI system. This could allow Siri to understand what the wearer is seeing without requiring them to take out their iPhone.
For example, if you are looking at a book, product or another object, you could potentially ask Siri questions about it while the AirPods' camera captures the visual information needed to answer.
Siri Could Understand What You're Looking At
The technology could make Siri considerably more useful in everyday situations.
Imagine looking at an unfamiliar object and asking, "What is this?" The camera could capture the object, send the relevant visual information to the AI system and allow Siri to respond.
In the leaked demonstration, the system reportedly identifies a book and gives the user an option to save information about the object for later.
This suggests that Apple's goal could extend beyond simple object recognition to creating a more context-aware AI assistant.
The Camera Will Need a Clear View
Since the system depends on the camera seeing the user's surroundings, keeping the camera unobstructed will be important.
The reported software includes warnings related to objects blocking the camera. For example, hair or another obstruction could interfere with the camera's ability to capture the environment accurately.
This could become an important consideration in the design of camera-equipped earbuds.
Could Camera AirPods Launch in September?
The AirPods with the B790 codename could reportedly arrive as early as September 2026. If Apple follows this timeline, the new AirPods could potentially be introduced alongside its upcoming iPhone lineup.
However, Apple has not officially announced these camera-equipped AirPods or confirmed a launch date.
The B790 project is also reportedly different from another camera-equipped AirPods project, known internally as B798, which is said to have been delayed until 2027.
A New Direction for AirPods
If Apple eventually launches AirPods with cameras, the biggest change may not be the ability to capture images. Instead, the cameras could turn the earbuds into an always-available visual interface for AI.
By combining cameras, microphones, AirPods and Visual Intelligence, Apple could allow users to interact with Siri based on what they are seeing in the real world.
For now, however, the product remains unconfirmed, and the leaked information should be treated as an early look at a possible future AirPods feature rather than an official Apple announcement.
