The Eighth Pay Commission is poised to be crucial for millions of central government employees and pensioners. Everyone's attention is focused on the expected increases in basic pay, fitment factor, pay matrix, and pensions. Five important updates have been released so far regarding the commission's work.
Nine months of the Commission's 18-month schedule have been completed
The Eighth Pay Commission has been given 18 months to submit its final recommendations, nine months of which have already been completed. The Commission has begun processing representations received from various ministries, departments, and employee organizations, and is also preparing an internal outline. Consultations are currently underway with representatives from various states and departments.
Arrears likely from January 1, 2026
As per the Commission's terms and conditions, the new pay scale is expected to come into effect on January 1, 2026. Even if the Commission's report and implementation are later, employees may receive arrears in the form of outstanding amounts, as the increased pay will be applicable from that date.
All eyes are on the fitment factor
The fitment factor in the 7th Pay Commission was 2.57. This time, employee unions have demanded an increase from 2.86 to 3.68. However, the final fitment factor has not yet been finalized. According to some estimates, it is likely to be between 2.25 and 2.57.
A significant increase in basic salary?
Currently, the minimum basic salary is ₹18,000. If a fitment factor of 2.25 to 2.57 is applied, the basic salary could increase to approximately ₹40,000 to ₹46,000. The current pension is ₹9,000 and is also expected to increase. However, these figures are not final, but rather potential estimates.
Meetings are underway with employees and pensioners.
The Commission is seeking representations from defense, railway, postal, civil service, and pension organizations. Inflation and cost of living are being reviewed through discussions with employee representatives in various cities. Importantly, the final decision regarding the fitment factor and the new pay matrix will be finalized only after the Commission's recommendations and the central government's approval.
