The Samajwadi Party (SP) recently expelled three rebel MLAs—Abhay Singh (Gosaiganj), Rakesh Pratap Singh (Gauriganj), and Manoj Pandey (Unchahar)—for working against the party’s ‘PDA’ ideology and supporting BJP interests. These three were part of a group of seven MLAs who had rebelled during the 2024 Rajya Sabha elections by voting for BJP candidates.

But why were only these three expelled while the other four MLAs—Pooja Pal (Chail), Vinod Chaturvedi (Kalpi), Rakesh Pandey (Ambedkar Nagar), and Ashutosh Maurya (Bisauli)—allowed to remain?

Reasons Behind the Selective Expulsions:

• Public Rebellion and Statements:
  The three expelled MLAs were the most vocal critics of Akhilesh Yadav and the SP. They openly spoke against the party leadership, praised BJP leaders, and criticized SP’s policies, branding the party as “anti-Hindu” or accusing Akhilesh of being “small-hearted.” Their open rebellion and public anti-party stance forced Akhilesh’s hand.

• Caste and Electoral Calculus:
  The three expelled belong to upper castes (two Thakurs and one Brahmin), and their removal does not significantly hurt SP’s core vote bank, which focuses on the PDA coalition—Dalits, OBCs, and minorities. The four spared MLAs come from backward caste groups or have maintained a low profile, which helps Akhilesh maintain vital caste equations and vote-bank support.

• Grace Period and Good Behavior:
  SP officially stated that the remaining four MLAs had been given a “grace period” for change of heart and had shown “good behavior.” They have not made public statements against the party, so Akhilesh has kept them within the fold for political pragmatism.

Political Implications:

• Preserving PDA Base:
  Expelling all seven rebels could have alienated important backward caste and Dalit groups. Keeping four MLAs from these communities strengthens SP’s PDA alliance and ensures no major disruption in its vote base.

• Sending a Message to Upper Castes:
  Expelling the outspoken upper-caste rebels signals Akhilesh’s intolerance for dissent while also showing that loyalty to the party and its ideology matters.

• Balancing Act:
  Akhilesh Yadav is balancing party discipline with electoral strategy by targeting the loudest dissenters without disrupting caste-based equations.
