Smartphones are entering a new phase where artificial intelligence is no longer limited to chatbots or photo-editing tools. AI is gradually becoming part of the operating system itself, helping users search, organise, edit and understand information with fewer steps.
Recent Android and Samsung updates show how this transition is happening. Google is making Gemini more accessible from Android's text-selection menu, while Samsung is adding more AI-powered tools to its latest Galaxy devices.
AI is moving into everyday phone functions
Earlier, using AI usually meant opening a separate application and typing a question. That is changing.
Google has introduced a direct "Ask Gemini" option in Android's text-selection menu. Users can highlight text and access Gemini without first opening the sharing menu. This makes AI feel more like a built-in smartphone function rather than another app.
Your camera can become more intelligent
Modern smartphone cameras are already heavily dependent on computational photography, but AI is taking things further.
Samsung's latest software development includes My FanCam, an AI-based video feature that can track a selected person and automatically keep them centred in the frame. This can be particularly useful when recording concerts, sports events or social-media videos.
Instead of manually adjusting the video after recording, the phone can perform much of the work automatically.
AI is also changing how notifications work
Another major development is the move towards phones that understand which information is important.
Samsung's Now Brief is being expanded with more personalised information cards, while Now Nudge can provide contextual suggestions. The broader idea is to reduce the amount of information users have to search for themselves.
In the future, your phone could increasingly decide which information deserves your attention rather than simply displaying every notification that arrives.
Even budget phones are getting smarter
AI features are no longer restricted entirely to ultra-premium smartphones.
Samsung has brought several Galaxy AI capabilities to its more affordable Galaxy S26 FE, while promising long-term software and security support. The device also launches with One UI 9, showing how manufacturers are gradually bringing advanced software experiences to lower price segments.
This could eventually make AI features a standard expectation across smartphone price categories.
The processor is becoming more important
AI isn't only about software. Smartphone manufacturers are also developing specialised processors capable of handling increasingly demanding AI workloads.
Xiaomi, for instance, has unveiled its own 3nm Xring O3 smartphone processor, which is scheduled to power its upcoming foldable device. The company is also developing chips for other technology categories, highlighting the growing importance of in-house semiconductor development.
Meanwhile, Xiaomi's upcoming foldable is expected to use advanced LPDDR6 memory, another sign that smartphone hardware is being redesigned around increasingly demanding workloads.
But smarter phones also create new risks
The more information a smartphone can understand, the more important privacy becomes.
AI systems may eventually interact with messages, photos, documents, location information and other personal data. At the same time, cybersecurity experts are increasingly concerned about AI being used to make cyberattacks faster and more sophisticated. The Financial Stability Board has warned that AI-driven cyber risk is becoming a serious concern for financial stability.
So the future smartphone won't simply need better AI—it will also need stronger security and clearer controls over what that AI can access.
The smartphone is slowly becoming an AI assistant
The biggest change may be that users won't always need to open an AI app and ask a question.
AI is gradually appearing inside text selection, cameras, notifications, search and other everyday functions. Instead of thinking about AI as a separate feature, users may eventually use it without even noticing that AI is working in the background.
