In today's digital age, WhatsApp is being used extensively not only for messaging but also for money transactions. However, as the use of WhatsApp Payments has grown, so too has the ingenuity of cyber scammers.
Many people are emptying their bank accounts after being lured by offers like "lucky draws," "jobs from home," or KYC updates. Here are some important tips to use WhatsApp Payments safely and avoid fraud:
1. Never share your PIN or OTP.
No bank or WhatsApp official will ever ask you for your UPI PIN or OTP. If someone asks for such information over the phone or via text, it could be a fraudulent attempt. Always remember that you don't need to enter your PIN to receive money.
2. Avoid clicking on suspicious links.
Never click on links from unknown numbers that claim to offer "cashback" or "prizes." Such links can take you to fake websites and steal your bank details.
3. Turn on two-step verification.
To increase the security of your WhatsApp account, be sure to turn on two-step verification in Settings. This way, even if someone tries to hack your account, they won't be able to access it without your six-digit PIN.
4. Refuse payment requests from strangers
You may receive payment requests from strangers on WhatsApp. Before accepting such requests, make sure the person is trustworthy. If you accidentally click on such a request and enter your PIN, your account may be deducted.
5. Beware of screen-sharing apps.
Cybercriminals often ask you to download screen-sharing apps (like Anydesk, TeamViewer) under the guise of helping you. This gives them complete control of your phone and allows them to easily drain your bank account.
6. Check the profile and identity.
Even if someone you know asks for money, don't rush into sending it. Hackers often use a photo of someone you know to ask for money. In such cases, it's safest to call the person in person and confirm.
What to do if you're scammed?
If you've been scammed, immediately call the National Cybercrime Helpline at 1930 or file a complaint on the Cybercrime.gov.in portal. Also, inform your bank and temporarily block your account.
