Wash and Dry Thoroughly

Winter garments accumulate sweat, dust, and skin oils throughout the season. Storing them without washing can lead to odors, fungus, and insect infestations. Before storage, blankets, quilts, sweaters, and jackets should be washed and dried completely in bright sunlight to reduce moisture and prevent the growth of bacteria or fungi.

Sunlight Exposure Is Crucial

Exposing clothing to sunlight for 2–3 hours before storage helps eliminate moisture and kill bacteria and fungi, ensuring that the garments remain fresh and free of unpleasant odors during the off-season.

Protect Against Insects

Woolen items are particularly vulnerable to moths, termites, and other insects. To protect them, household items such as naphthalene balls, camphor, or dried neem leaves can be placed between layers of clothing. Experts advise wrapping naphthalene balls in cloth or paper to avoid direct contact with fabrics.

Use Airtight Storage

Storing clothes in airtight bags, vacuum-sealed bags, or plastic boxes with lids prevents dust, moisture, and insects from affecting the garments. Vacuum bags are especially effective, as they reduce bulk while keeping blankets and jackets in optimal condition.

Proper Stacking and Organization

Heavy items, such as blankets and jackets, should be placed at the bottom, while lighter sweaters and scarves go on top. Storing different categories of clothing separately makes them easier to retrieve next winter and helps maintain their shape and quality.
