Will WhatsApp access be blocked if you change your SIM? The platform is testing a new feature

WhatsApp is working on a SIM-binding feature for Indian users. SIM-based login verification could be implemented under a DoT directive.

New rules for messaging apps may soon be implemented in India. According to a report, WhatsApp is working on a SIM-binding feature for Indian users. This move follows a directive from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) that mandates SIM-based login verification for messaging apps that allow sign-up using a phone number. This rule will apply to WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, and other similar platforms.

According to features tracker WABetaInfo, a new popup has been spotted in WhatsApp's Android beta v2.26.8.6, stating that due to regulatory requirements in India, the app will need to check if a registered SIM card is present in the user's device. However, this feature is currently in development and is unlikely to be available to all users in the near future.

According to the report, as part of the SIM binding process, WhatsApp will periodically renew a user's account session and verify that the SIM card used in the phone is the same one used to create the account. This process only applies to accounts with +91, i.e., Indian numbers. If an account fails SIM verification, the app may temporarily limit access, though existing chats and messages will remain safe.

The DoT issued this directive in November 2025, reportedly aimed at curbing the growing cyber fraud in the country. Under the directive, chat platforms will also be required to automatically log out of web or desktop clients every six hours. Users will need to use a QR code to log back in on the linked device. Currently, this feature is not visible in the development version of WhatsApp.

This move has also been opposed by some organizations. The Internet Freedom Foundation has urged the DoT to reconsider the SIM binding requirement. The organization argued that users may face difficulties in situations such as a damaged SIM or purchasing an international pack while traveling abroad. Currently, no official rollout timeline has been announced by WhatsApp or Meta.
