Will India be subjected to 100% tariff? Trump does not like Modi-Putin-Xi Jinping's friendship, also lashed out at China

Donald Trump, while pretending to be friends with India, is appealing to the European Union to impose 100% tariff on India. He is pressurizing India not to buy Russian oil because India buys oil from Russia. Trump is also talking about imposing tariff on China. Trump's restlessness has increased after the meeting of Modi, Jinping and Putin in the SCO summit.

On one hand, US President Donald Trump is extending a hand of friendship to India and on the other hand, he is appealing to the European Union to impose 100 percent tariff on India. Trump has also appealed to impose 100 percent tariff on China.

The president made the extraordinary demand after attending a meeting between senior US and EU officials in Washington on Tuesday to discuss ways to raise the economic costs of the war for Moscow, the Financial Times reported, citing unnamed officials.

Trump's ploy is not working

In fact, the US President is adopting every trick to put pressure on India to not buy Russian oil. First Trump imposed a 50 percent tariff on India and now he is appealing to the European Union to impose 100 percent tariff on India. Trump's statement has come at a time when just a few hours ago he had talked about taking forward the trade talks between India and America.

Trump is worried about Modi-Xi Jinping-Putin meeting

Let us tell you that after the meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the SCO Summit, US President Trump's restlessness has increased. Trump is constantly trying to put pressure on India to not buy Russian oil, but he is not succeeding.

India buys oil from Russia

After Western countries imposed sanctions on Moscow and cut off its supplies following its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, India began buying Russian oil sold at a discount. As a result, Russia's share in total oil imports rose from a mere 1.7 per cent in 2019-20 to 35.1 per cent in 2024-25 and it is now India's largest oil supplier.

The FT report comes amid renewed efforts by Trump to end the Ukraine conflict.

The US President met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska last month to consider ways to end the conflict.
