We all know that extreme heat can cause problems like headache, dizziness and vomiting, but do you know that extreme heat also affects blood pressure and sugar and due to this the blood pressure and sugar level starts increasing and decreasing, let us understand the reason for this from the experts.
Extreme heat affects our entire body. When the temperature is high, it impacts many of our body functions. Heat affects our brain, blood pressure, sugar, digestion and body's ability to function. High heat also affects blood pressure and sugar levels, and fluctuations can be seen in them. Let's learn from experts how blood pressure and sugar imbalances occur amid rising mercury. Dr. M. Sheetal Kumar, Consultant Physicians and Diabetologists, Hyderabad Yashoda Hospitals, is giving information about this.

Why does blood pressure and sugar level increase and decrease in extreme heat?
- Dehydration and the body's stress response in extreme heat can cause fluctuations in blood pressure and sugar levels. Sweating in extreme heat increases blood pressure, which thickens the blood, concentrating glucose in the blood, leading to a rise in blood sugar levels. This is due to increased levels of the hormones cortisol and vasopressin.
- Additionally, dehydration can cause blood volume to decrease and blood pressure to drop. However, arteries often dilate to cool the body, which can sometimes lead to a drop or increase in blood pressure.
- Regarding blood sugar, insulin absorption into the blood vessels increases during extreme heat, and those already taking diabetes medication are at risk of hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. Many people may also experience difficulty using insulin.
- It has a greater impact on diabetic patients, because the nervous system makes it difficult to sweat and cool the body.

- When our body becomes overheated due to extreme heat, dehydration can cause low blood pressure and dizziness.
- Due to sweating in summer, our body gets dehydrated and this also has a direct effect on the blood sugar level.
- Check your blood pressure 3-4 times a day. Avoid going out in the sun and stay hydrated.
