The aroma and texture of freshly baked bread at home are unmatched. While many believe that achieving perfectly white, soft and spongy bread like store-bought loaves is difficult, the process becomes simple with the right technique and patience. With a few basic ingredients and careful kneading, you can prepare bakery-style white bread in your own kitchen.
Essential Ingredients
-
3 cups all-purpose flour (maida)
-
1 cup lukewarm water
-
2 tablespoons sugar
-
1½ teaspoons instant yeast
-
1 teaspoon salt
-
2 tablespoons melted butter or oil
-
Extra butter for brushing on top
Method of Preparation
1. Activate the Yeast
In a large bowl, pour lukewarm water and add sugar. Stir until dissolved, then add the yeast. Allow the mixture to rest for 5 to 10 minutes until it becomes frothy. The foam indicates that the yeast is active. Add melted butter and salt to the mixture.
2. Knead the Dough Thoroughly
Gradually add flour to the yeast mixture and combine well. Transfer the dough to a flat surface and knead for at least 8 to 10 minutes. The dough should become smooth, soft and elastic. Proper kneading develops gluten, which is essential for achieving a light and spongy texture.
3. First Proofing
Lightly grease a bowl with oil and place the kneaded dough inside. Cover it with a cloth or lid and let it rest in a warm place for about one hour, or until the dough doubles in size.
4. Shape and Bake
Once the dough has risen, gently punch it down to release excess air. Shape it into a loaf and place it in a greased bread tin. Cover and let it rest for another 30 minutes for the second rise.
Preheat the oven to 190°C and bake the bread for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the top turns golden brown.
5. Final Touch
Remove the bread from the oven and immediately brush the top with a little butter. This helps keep the crust soft and enhances flavour. Allow the loaf to cool completely before slicing to maintain its structure.
