WhatsApp Won’t Work Without a SIM Card From March 1: Deadline Not Extended, Here’s How It Affects You

The central government has made it clear that the deadline for implementing SIM Binding Rules will not be extended beyond February 28. From March 1, 2026, popular messaging and social media apps such as WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, ShareChat, Snapchat, JioChat, and Josh will stop working on your phone if there is no SIM card inserted.
Under the new rule, even WhatsApp accounts logged in on laptops or desktops will be automatically logged out within six hours if the linked SIM is not present in the phone. This move marks a major shift in how messaging platforms operate in India and directly impacts users who rely on Wi-Fi-only devices or secondary phones without SIM cards.
What is SIM Binding and why is it being introduced?
SIM binding is a security mechanism that links your messaging app account directly to the physical SIM card installed in your phone. This means the app will only function if the registered SIM card is present in the same device. The government says this step will make it much harder for cyber criminals and fraudsters to misuse phone numbers on multiple devices or through virtual setups.
When will the SIM binding rule come into effect?
The SIM binding requirement will be implemented nationwide from March 1, 2026. From this date, messaging apps will verify the presence of the registered SIM card before allowing access.
Why hasn’t the government extended the deadline?
Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has clearly stated that there is no plan to extend the deadline. According to him, these rules are essential for national security and for curbing rising cyber fraud cases. He emphasized that the government is not willing to compromise on digital safety and security concerns.
What do users need to do now?
Users must ensure that the SIM card linked to their WhatsApp or other messaging app account remains inserted in the same phone. If the SIM card is removed, the app may immediately stop working. Those using WhatsApp only on desktops, tablets, or old phones without SIM cards will be most affected by this change.
What happens if companies fail to comply?
As per the government order, companies must ensure compliance within 120 days. If they fail to do so, strict action can be taken under the Telecom Cyber Security Rules, the Telecommunications Act 2023, and other applicable laws.
