WhatsApp to Introduce ‘After Reading’ Feature: Messages Will Disappear Once Seen

WhatsApp is preparing a major privacy upgrade that could change how users handle sensitive chats. The new feature, called “After Reading,” will allow messages to disappear only after they are opened—giving users more control over when their conversations vanish.

How the New Feature Works

According to reports, this feature has been spotted in beta testing and works differently from the current disappearing messages system.

  • The timer will start only after the recipient reads the message
  • Until the message is opened, it will remain सुरक्षित and visible
  • Once read, it will automatically disappear after the selected time

This is a big shift from the current system, where the countdown begins as soon as the message is sent.

More Flexible Time Options

WhatsApp is also expected to introduce new timing controls, such as:

  • 5 minutes
  • 1 hour
  • 12 hours

For example, if you set a 5-minute timer, the message will delete itself 5 minutes after it is read—not before.

Why This Matters

This feature is especially useful for sharing sensitive information like:

  • OTPs
  • Personal details
  • Confidential messages

It ensures that the message stays intact until the receiver actually sees it, improving both privacy and usability.

Works Alongside Existing Features

The new “After Reading” option will not replace the current disappearing messages feature. Instead, users will get two choices:

  • Timer starting after sending (existing feature)
  • Timer starting after reading (new feature)

This gives more flexibility depending on how users want their messages to behave.

Rollout Status

The feature is currently under development and has been spotted in beta versions available via Google Play Store. It is expected to roll out to beta users first, followed by a wider release.
