WhatsApp Testing New Welcome Message Feature for Groups to Greet New Members Automatically

Popular messaging platform WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature designed to make group conversations more interactive and welcoming. According to recent reports, WhatsApp is preparing to introduce a “Welcome Greeting Messages” feature for groups, allowing admins to send custom greeting messages automatically to newly joined members.

The upcoming feature is expected to improve the overall group experience by helping new users feel more connected and informed immediately after joining a group. Instead of entering a completely unfamiliar conversation, new members will receive a personalized welcome note from the group admin.

The feature has reportedly been spotted in the latest WhatsApp beta update for Android and may arrive for more users in future updates.

WhatsApp Working on ‘Welcome Greeting Messages’

According to reports shared by WABetaInfo, the new feature was discovered in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.19.2.

The feature is designed specifically for group admins. Once enabled, admins will be able to create a customized greeting message that will automatically appear for new members when they join the group.

The welcome message can include:

  • Group rules
  • Introduction text
  • Important instructions
  • Friendly greetings
  • Useful links or reminders

This could make it easier for new users to understand the purpose and environment of the group without needing to ask basic questions repeatedly.

How the Feature Will Work

Reports suggest that WhatsApp is adding a new option called “Send Welcome Greeting” inside the Group Permissions section.

Admins will reportedly see a toggle button that can activate or deactivate the feature.

Once turned on:

  1. The admin can type a custom welcome message
  2. The message gets saved inside group settings
  3. Every new member joining the group will automatically receive the greeting

An important detail is that the welcome message will only be visible to newly joined members. Existing group participants will not repeatedly see the same greeting notification.

This approach helps keep group chats clean while still providing useful onboarding information to newcomers.

Feature Aims to Improve Group Communication

WhatsApp groups often become difficult for new members to understand, especially in large communities with hundreds of messages exchanged daily.

The new greeting feature could help:

  • Reduce confusion
  • Introduce group guidelines
  • Encourage participation
  • Create a friendlier atmosphere

For example, school groups, office teams, fan communities, and study groups could use greeting messages to instantly share:

  • Rules and policies
  • Group objectives
  • Important announcements
  • Contact information
  • Discussion topics

This may save time for admins while making group management smoother.

WhatsApp Also Added Message History for New Members

The greeting feature comes shortly after WhatsApp introduced another major group improvement earlier this year.

In February, WhatsApp reportedly launched a “Group Message History” feature that allows newly added members to view older messages from before they joined the group.

Through this feature, admins can decide how much past chat history becomes visible to newcomers.

Available options reportedly include:

  • 25 messages
  • 50 messages
  • 75 messages
  • 100 messages

This gives new members better context about ongoing discussions and helps them catch up quickly without missing important information.

Combined with the upcoming greeting system, WhatsApp appears to be focusing heavily on improving the onboarding experience for group chats.

Feature Still Under Development

At the moment, the Welcome Greeting feature is still under testing and has not yet been released widely for stable users.

Since it has only been spotted in beta versions of the app, there is no official rollout timeline available yet.

However, WhatsApp frequently tests features in beta before introducing them globally, so the feature could eventually become available for Android and iPhone users in future updates.

WhatsApp Continues Expanding Group Features

Over the past few years, WhatsApp has aggressively improved its group chat capabilities to compete with platforms like Telegram and Discord.

The platform has already introduced:

  • Community support
  • Larger group capacities
  • Admin controls
  • Polls
  • Events
  • Group call improvements
  • Chat history sharing

The upcoming Welcome Greeting feature further shows WhatsApp’s effort to make group communication more organized and user-friendly.

As online communities continue growing, tools that simplify onboarding and improve engagement are becoming increasingly important for messaging platforms worldwide.
