WhatsApp Takes on Google Pay and PhonePe: Pay Electricity, Gas, Credit Card and FASTag Bills Without Leaving the App

WhatsApp is expanding its digital payment services in India with a new Bill Payments feature. The Meta-owned messaging platform will allow users to pay a wide range of everyday bills directly through WhatsApp, including electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit card and loan payments.

The new service has been introduced in collaboration with Bharat Connect (BBPS), giving users access to more than 22,700 billers across 30 categories.

The move puts WhatsApp in greater competition with established digital payment platforms such as Google Pay and PhonePe, which already offer extensive bill payment services.

Bill Payments Coming to Android and iPhone

WhatsApp is rolling out the new feature across India in phases. The company said it will gradually become available to users on both Android and iOS.

With Bill Pay, users will be able to complete payments without switching to another application. The company aims to make paying regular bills as simple as sending a message.

Users can access the feature from the Payments section on WhatsApp, view previous transactions and upcoming bills, and manage multiple accounts with the same service provider.

Pay Multiple Types of Bills From One Place

The new feature supports a wide range of everyday payments, including:

  • Electricity bills

  • Gas bills

  • Water bills

  • FASTag payments

  • Insurance premiums

  • Credit card bills

  • Loan payments

  • Other BBPS-supported services

This could be particularly useful for people who currently use separate apps for different types of payments.

Manage Home, Office and Family Accounts

WhatsApp is also adding features designed for users who manage several bills.

Home Bills Summary

Bills from billers that users have previously paid through WhatsApp can appear in the Payments section, allowing quicker access to frequently used services.

Multiple Accounts Under One Biller

Users can manage multiple accounts with the same service provider. For example, someone could keep separate home, office and family accounts together under one biller.

Frequently Used Categories

Popular bill categories can appear automatically in the Payments section. Users can also select “See All” to browse the wider range of supported categories.

How to Pay a Bill on WhatsApp

Using the new bill payment system is designed to be straightforward:

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap the rupee icon at the top of the home screen.

  2. Select the relevant bill category and biller.

  3. Enter the required customer or account details.

  4. Check the bill information and amount fetched by the system.

  5. Select a supported payment method, such as UPI, debit card or credit card.

  6. Confirm the payment.

Once the feature reaches your account, the exact options displayed may depend on the biller and payment method supported.

WhatsApp Wants to Become More Than a Messaging App

Arun Srinivas, MD and Regional Head of Meta India, said WhatsApp has become an important platform for Indians to communicate with family and friends, interact with businesses, access citizen services and make purchases.

The company is now looking to make routine bill payments equally convenient by allowing users to complete the process without moving between different apps.

WhatsApp already supports several services in India, including mobile recharges, metro ticket bookings in selected cities and access to government services through chatbots. Bill payments expand this ecosystem further.

UPI Continues to Break Records in India

WhatsApp's move comes as digital payments continue to grow rapidly across India.

According to the figures cited in the report, UPI processed a record 24.51 billion transactions in August 2026, representing a 3.6% increase from July. The total transaction value stood at approximately ₹29.82 lakh crore.

UPI has become deeply integrated into everyday Indian commerce, from small retail purchases to larger person-to-person transfers.

UPI Has Transformed Everyday Payments

Launched by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in April 2016, UPI has expanded dramatically over the past decade.

The network has grown from a small number of participating banks at launch to more than 700 connected banks. UPI is also being adopted internationally and is currently operational in several countries.

Small-value merchant payments make up a significant portion of UPI's transaction volume. A large share of person-to-merchant transactions are for amounts below ₹500, highlighting how deeply digital payments have entered everyday shopping and retail spending.

WhatsApp Enters an Already Competitive Market

By bringing utility bill payments directly into its messaging platform, WhatsApp is attempting to make the app a more comprehensive digital services destination.

For users, the biggest advantage could be convenience: instead of opening different apps for messaging, recharges and bill payments, many routine tasks can increasingly be handled within WhatsApp itself.

As the feature rolls out to more users, it will be interesting to see whether WhatsApp's huge user base helps it gain a stronger position in India's highly competitive digital payments market.
