WhatsApp Plus is Meta's new paid subscription layer designed to give users extra personalization and convenience features without altering the core messaging experience. It doesn't replace the free version of WhatsApp, but adds optional premium tools for users who want more control over how the app looks and functions.
WhatsApp has been quietly building out its paid tier, and iPhone users are finally getting their turn. After arriving on Android in April, the app's premium subscription is now rolling out to a small number of iOS users, reports WABetaInfo. It's a phased rollout, so not everyone will see it right away, but more accounts are expected to gain access in the coming weeks.
If you're using Android and already know what WhatsApp Plus brings, it's mostly the same package as what's coming to iOS. But if you're new to it, here's a full breakdown of what the subscription actually offers and whether it's worth your money.
What's in WhatsApp Plus?
The subscription is all about personalization. Essentially, WhatsApp Plus provides access to six premium features that don't affect the messaging experience, as your chat, calls, and privacy settings remain the same. Think of it as a cosmetic and organizational layer on top of what you already use.
The most striking aspect is the app theme system. Subscribers can choose from 18 accent colors, ranging from royal purple and deep navy to fuchsia pink and sunset orange. The chosen colors are consistent throughout the interface. This is surprisingly well implemented for a platform that has previously been quite adamant about its green and white look.
Additionally, you get 14 new custom app icons, ranging from glitter-effect designs to clean black-and-white styles, and a set of premium animated stickers exclusive to subscribers. Non-subscribers can also see these stickers in chats if someone sends them, but they can't use them. It's a nice touch that doesn't create a fragmented experience.
While the pinned chat
theme color is a fun feature, the most useful feature is the increased pinned chat limit. Currently, WhatsApp only lets you pin three conversations. With WhatsApp Plus, this number increases to 20.
Protection for iPhones
This is a big deal for those who manage work groups, family chats, and important one-on-one chats all at the same time. And it pairs well with another Plus feature, bulk chat list settings. If you've grouped your coworkers into a chat list, you can apply the same theme, alert tone, and ringtone to all those conversations at once. Less hassle, more organization.
This feature set includes 10 new premium ringtones, such as Flutter, Tempo, Ripple, and Carnival. These are designed to make it easier to distinguish WhatsApp calls from other apps. Small but useful if multiple apps are fighting for your attention.
Pricing and availability
WhatsApp Plus costs €2.49 per month in Europe, PKR 229.00 per month in Pakistan, and $29.00 per month in Mexico. Pricing for other regions has not yet been confirmed. WhatsApp Plus doesn't appear to be available in China yet, and its final pricing may vary upon a wider release.
WhatsApp Plus is compatible with WhatsApp for iOS version 26.17.74 and is only available on WhatsApp Messenger, not WhatsApp Business. The Premium plan uses a monthly subscription model that automatically renews each billing cycle. Unless manually canceled, the subscription continues and renews monthly. WhatsApp processes charges each month on the original purchase date. To avoid being billed for the next cycle, users must cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date via the App Store. WhatsApp may also offer eligible users a free trial of up to one month before committing.
Final Thoughts
WhatsApp Plus isn't trying to lock its exclusive features behind a paywall, and that's the right decision. The messaging experience remains the same for everyone, and the subscription is all about making the app feel like your own. This kind of low-stakes personalization is a good monetization tool for a platform used by billions of people.
