WhatsApp is reportedly preparing a fresh design change for Android users. The Meta-owned messaging platform is testing a redesigned bottom navigation bar that could give the Android app a cleaner and more modern appearance.

The new interface is currently being tested and may not be available to everyone yet. According to WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the redesigned navigation bar uses a floating layout with rounded corners and has similarities to the navigation design already seen on WhatsApp for iPhone.

What will change on WhatsApp?

The biggest visual change is expected at the bottom of the screen. Instead of the existing navigation design, WhatsApp is working on a floating bar with rounded edges.

The change is mainly focused on improving navigation and giving the Android version a more polished appearance. However, the design is still under development, so the final version could look different when it reaches regular users.

WhatsApp is also changing how Channels appear

The navigation redesign is not the only change being tested. WhatsApp is also working on moving Channels into the Chats tab on Android.

Users who already follow Channels could see them alongside their conversations, making it easier to switch between personal chats and channel content. WhatsApp is reportedly planning to remove the separate Updates tab once the new arrangement is fully implemented.

This could make the app feel more unified because users would be able to access conversations and followed channels from the same area.

More features are coming to WhatsApp Channels

WhatsApp has also been expanding Channel Status. Channel administrators can share temporary photos and videos that disappear after 24 hours, similar to the disappearing nature of regular WhatsApp Status updates.

Followers can interact with these updates and reshare them to their own Status, giving Channels another way to engage with their audience.

WhatsApp is becoming more connected with Instagram and Facebook

Meta is also making it easier to move content between its platforms. WhatsApp has started rolling out access to Instagram and Facebook media, allowing users to share Stories, posts and Reels through WhatsApp.

The feature requires users to link WhatsApp with Meta's Accounts Center and is being gradually rolled out to users on Android and iOS.

More changes could arrive soon

WhatsApp is also reportedly working on several smaller improvements, including birthday reminders, voice-to-text messaging and additional customization options.

The Android redesign, however, could be one of the most noticeable changes because it affects the basic way users navigate the app.
