What is Sim Binding, due to which your WhatsApp may stop working, who will face the problem?

The way messaging apps are used in the country is set to change from March 1, 2026. The central government has clarified that the SIM-binding rule will be implemented on schedule and the deadline will not be extended beyond February 28.

Under this rule, apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal will only work if the SIM card used to create the account is present in the phone. The government says this step is to prevent cyber fraud, fraudulent calls, and fraudulent profiles. Several companies have expressed concern about this government decision.

SIM binding means that your messaging account will be linked to your physical SIM card. This means that the SIM card you used to register on the app must remain active in your mobile.

If that SIM is removed from the phone, becomes inactive, or is inserted into another phone, the app may be logged out or its usage may be limited. Simply put, it will no longer be possible to use WhatsApp without a SIM.

This rule will come into effect nationwide from March 1, 2026. After this, the SIM card must be in the phone with the same number registered with WhatsApp or Telegram. If the SIM card is not in the phone, the app may stop working. WhatsApp running as a linked device on a computer or laptop may be logged out every six hours. Re-verification will be required to use it again.

Additionally, SIM validation may be performed regularly, meaning the account is linked to an active SIM. According to reports, WhatsApp is rolling out a feature for Indian users that will check SIM validity in the ''>6 /8

Regarding this, Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has stated that there is currently no consideration of extending the deadline for the rules. He stated that national security and preventing digital fraud are top priorities, and no compromise will be made on this issue.

It is being said that this rule can especially affect those users who use WhatsApp on multiple devices with the same number, who keep changing SIM cards frequently or small businesses or professionals who work on computers for long periods of time through linked devices.

The Internet and Mobile Association of India, an organization related to the internet industry, has also said that professional users may face many problems due to frequent logouts and verifications.
