Uttarakhand Forms Minority Education Authority; New Body to Decide Curriculum for Minority Students

The Pushkar Singh Dhami-led Uttarakhand government has constituted a State Minority Education Authority, which will now determine the curriculum and educational framework for minority children in the state. This move follows the government’s decision to abolish the Madrasa Board with effect from July 2026.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said the newly formed authority will decide what kind of education will be imparted to minority students and will be responsible for setting the syllabus. He added that all minority educational institutions will now be required to obtain recognition from the Uttarakhand Education Board.

Madrasa Board abolished

State Special Secretary Dr. Parag Madhukar Dhakate explained that the Chief Minister had announced the dissolution of the Madrasa Board during the last session of the state assembly. Subsequently, provisions were made to bring all minority institutions under the newly established State Minority Education Authority.

According to Dr. Dhakate, the government has made it mandatory for all minority institutions to be accredited by the Uttarakhand Education Board. The authority will oversee academic standards and design the curriculum for minority students, ensuring a structured and regulated education system.

Eminent academicians appointed

As per the Chief Minister’s directions, noted scholars and academicians from various minority communities have been nominated to the authority. Dr. Surjit Singh Gandhi has been appointed as the Chairman. The members include Prof. Rakesh Jain, Dr. Syed Ali Hamid, Prof. Pema Tenzin, Dr. Elba Madriel, Prof. Robina Aman, and Prof. Gurmeet Singh.

In addition, social worker Rajendra Bisht and retired officer Chandrashekhar Bhatt have also been included as members of the authority.

The state government has stated that the objective of this move is to bring uniformity, transparency, and quality control in the education of minority students while ensuring proper academic oversight through a single regulatory body.
