UPI Payment Mistake? Know How to Get Your Money Back If You Transfer It to the Wrong Bank Account

UPI has made digital payments extremely convenient in India. From paying at grocery stores to transferring money to friends and family, millions of people use UPI applications such as Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm every day.

However, one small mistake while entering a UPI ID or selecting a contact can result in money being transferred to the wrong person. Many users panic after such incidents because they do not know how to recover the amount.

If you accidentally send money to an incorrect UPI ID, taking immediate action can improve your chances of getting it back.

1. Contact Your Bank Immediately

If money has been transferred to the wrong account, contact your bank's customer care service or visit your nearest branch.

Provide the transaction ID, payment date, amount and recipient details. Your bank can help you raise a complaint and initiate the applicable recovery process.

Remember, a successful UPI transaction generally cannot be cancelled directly through the payment application.

2. Raise a Complaint Through Your UPI Application

Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm provide options to report payment-related problems.

Open the transaction history, select the incorrect payment and choose the available help or dispute option. Explain that the money was transferred to the wrong recipient.

Keep the complaint reference number for future follow-ups.

3. Contact the NPCI Helpline or Raise a Complaint

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) operates the UPI payment infrastructure.

You can raise a complaint through the official NPCI website by selecting the relevant UPI transaction issue and providing the required details.

The complaint may be routed to the concerned payment service provider or bank for resolution.

4. Report Suspected Fraud Immediately

If the transfer happened because of an online scam, impersonation or fraudulent activity, report it immediately.

You can call India's cybercrime helpline at 1930 or submit a complaint through the official National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in.

Quick reporting is important because authorities may be able to take steps to prevent the money from being withdrawn or transferred further.

5. Keep Your Transaction Details Ready

Before raising a complaint, keep the following information available:

  • UPI transaction ID or reference number

  • Date and time of payment

  • Amount transferred

  • Your bank account details

  • Recipient's UPI ID or available transaction information

  • Screenshot or payment confirmation

These details can help the bank and payment service provider investigate the issue.

Can You Get Your Money Back After a Wrong UPI Transfer?

Recovery is not guaranteed. If the transaction was successful and the money reached another person's account, the bank generally needs to follow the applicable dispute and recovery process. The recipient's cooperation may also be required.

Do not assume that the payment application can reverse the transaction automatically.

Important Safety Tips Before Making UPI Payments

Always verify the recipient's name before entering your UPI PIN. For a new recipient, consider sending a small test amount first. Never share your UPI PIN or OTP with anyone, even if the person claims to represent your bank or payment application.

Also remember that you do not need to enter your UPI PIN to receive money.

UPI payments are convenient, but a few seconds spent checking the recipient's details can prevent significant financial losses. If a wrong transfer or fraud occurs, report it immediately rather than waiting for the problem to resolve itself.
