Those consuming Ashwagandha should beware, as it can cause stomach problems; the government has banned the use of the leaves

FSSAI Ban on Ashwagandha: Ashwagandha is commonly consumed to relieve weakness and stress. However, companies that manufacture its tablets also use the leaves. Now, the Ministry of AYUSH has banned the use of the leaves as well.

Ashwagandha Leaf Ban: If you use Ayurvedic medicines, you've likely consumed ashwagandha. Considered the "king of herbs," ashwagandha is in the news these days. India's Food and Drug Administration (FSSAI) and the Ministry of AYUSH have taken a major decision, banning the use of ashwagandha leaves in health supplements and medicines. Companies will now be able to use only the roots of ashwagandha in their products. Research suggests that consuming ashwagandha can cause liver and nerve problems. This government step is crucial for those who consume ashwagandha supplements to relieve stress and fatigue.

From thousands of years old Ayurvedic texts to modern science, only the root part of Ashwagandha has been considered safe. According to the Ministry of AYUSH, Ayurveda never recommends eating Ashwagandha leaves. The leaves are used for external use. The government clearly states that there is no concrete evidence regarding the benefits and safety of consuming Ashwagandha leaves. The root has been trusted by people for centuries and research on it is also available.

Liver and health risk!

The primary reason for banning Ashwagandha leaves is its safety. Research has found that the leaves contain high levels of certain compounds, such as withaferin A, which can be toxic. Consuming them can adversely affect the liver, increasing the risk of stomach ailments and nerve problems. Consuming the leaves can also disrupt thyroid levels. In response to these concerns, European countries Poland and Hungary have also banned the consumption of the leaves.

Government's hunter on the cunningness of companies

Demand for Ashwagandha supplements has risen rapidly in the market. In an effort to maximize profits, many companies are mixing the leaves with the roots. This means that these Ashwagandha supplements are causing harm rather than benefit. Ashwagandha leaves are 100 times cheaper than the roots, significantly reducing companies' costs. The government has issued strict orders requiring manufacturers to clearly state on packaging which part of the plant they use. Companies violating these regulations will be prosecuted.
