The Devbhoomi of Uttarakhand is home to numerous mysterious and ancient temples whose architecture and history leave everyone astonished. The Kapileshwar Mahadev Temple near Almora is one such unique shrine, standing strong despite having tilted to one side for centuries. This Shiva temple, approximately 1200 to 1300 years old, is known for its unique architecture and folklore.
Where is the Kapileshwar Mahadev Temple located?
The Kapileshwar Mahadev Temple is located near Simalti village, about 12 kilometers from the Almora district of Uttarakhand. Nestled near the serene confluence of the Shakuni and Phadka rivers, the temple is surrounded by natural beauty.
Historically, the construction of this temple is believed to be from the period of the Katyuri dynasty (8th to 9th century).
Why is this Shiva temple tilted to one side?
The Kapileshwar Mahadev Temple's biggest attraction is its tilted structure. Despite centuries of natural changes and seismic activity, the temple remains standing intact without collapsing.
Scientific/Geological View: According to experts, the tilting could have been caused by the texture of the ground or the shifting of the soil beneath the foundation.
Local folklore: According to the folklore of the region, this inclination is linked to the mythological battle between two snakes.
Mythological beliefs related to Pandavas and Maharishi Kapil
Construction by Pandavas in a single night: According to folklore, Pandavas built this temple in a single night during their exile or Agyatvas.
Maharishi Kapil's Penance: According to religious beliefs, Maharishi Kapil, the founder of the Samkhya philosophy, performed rigorous penance at this sacred site, and was pleased by it, and Lord Shiva appeared before him. This is why this shrine was named "Kapileshwar."
A center of faith for devotees
Devotees visit the temple throughout the year to worship the divine Shivalinga enshrined in its sanctum sanctorum. Grand fairs and special pujas are held here, especially during the month of Sawan, Kajari Teej, and Mahashivratri.
